The Backbone of Logistics: Reserve Soldiers Serving Through Shalav Bet
The logistical teams of Alog 99 are composed of reserve soldiers, some who served previously and others who joined the IDF through the Shalav Bet program. Originally designed to integrate Russian immigrants who made aliyah after standard draft age, this program has expanded significantly since October 7th to include all post-draft-age immigrants and chareidim (ultra-Orthodox Jews) who had not previously served. Shalav Bet offers an accelerated training program specifically designed to accommodate religious observance and cultural sensitivities, preparing participants for various roles, including fixing tanks and APCs, base security, emergency response teams, military police, technology, communications, and more, while also providing pathways to combat units for those who choose that route.
These soldiers face distinctive challenges that set their service apart. Many come from communities where military service has traditionally been discouraged, often leaving behind young families with wives caring for multiple small children at home, and abandoning established businesses and careers to answer the call of duty. Despite these significant personal sacrifices, these reserve soldiers are welcomed with open arms by their fellow unit members. Their dedication is deeply appreciated, and they are treated with the same respect and camaraderie as any other IDF soldier, demonstrating the unity and shared purpose that defines Israel's defense forces during these challenging times.
